QFC project 'indefinitely' on hold

Despite rumors to the contrary, the proposed mixed-use QFC-and-residential project at Stone Way North and North 40th Street has not been canceled, and the property is not on the market - at least not yet.

"That's not our first choice," said Kristin Maas, a spokesperson for QFC, a division of Kroger. "We want to move forward and make it work."

The project was put on hold "indefinitely" earlier this summer because of rising construction costs, but QFC is trying to work around that problem, according to Maas.

One option is to find ways to reduce costs, she said; a second option is to redesign the project and go back through the permitting process.

QFC would be responsible for the construction costs of the grocery store, while a developer would be responsible for the costs of the residential component, she said in an earlier interview.

So is the developer still on board? "I believe they're still interested in moving forward," Mass said.

In the meantime, she said, a retaining wall on the east side of the property has been shored up, a trench dug earlier has been filled in and a pump continues to remove water bubbling to the surface from an underground spring.
