The Queen Anne and Magnolia News garnered five awards at the annual Washing-ton Newspaper Publishers Association convention held Oct. 5-6 in Yakima.
The News' winning entries in the 2007 Better Newspaper Contest also appeared in the Magnolia News. (The two papers, separated in October 2003, were recombined as Queen Anne & Magnolia News this past May.)
The Queen Anne News was judged in the Group IV, or highest, circulation category.
Reporter Russ Zabel took home two second-place awards. One, in the Best Crime and Courts Reporting category, was entitled "Mayhem at Mr. Lucky." Zabel's "Tower Records closing" feature was recognized in the "Best Business Story" competition.
The Queen Anne & Magnolia Residents Guide, for the second year running, won first place for Best Special Section: Tourism/Community Guide. Editors Richard T. Jameson and Rick Levin and freelance graphic designer Alex R. Mayer were named in the award.
One judge wrote of the Residents Guide: "Beautiful! The compelling and sometimes haunting narrative style of the writers gave me the feeling this is a place I'd love to be."
Matthew Wilemski received a second place in the freelance category for his column "On Wings."
In the advertising division Mark Mannion took first place in the Best Classified Display, Single Ad category for an employee recruitment ad designed for Starbucks.
The WNPA competition was judged by the Oklahoma Press Association.
