Proposed condo legislation fails to pass at state level

Seattle's proposed Legislation to help renters affected by condominium construction died in state legislation. About 3 percent of Seattle's rental stock has recently been convereted to condominiums since 2004, affecting more than 4,000 city apartments.

The legislation would have helped low income renters with the cost of moving and provided more advance notice to purchase or vacate their rental apartments.

"I am very disappointed that theLegislature failed to recognize the crisis and failed to give local government greater ability to help low income renters who must move," said Seatte City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen. "The proposed legislation balanced the rights of property owner with the need to help people who are impacted by the [condo] conversions," added Councilmember Rasmussen, "I will continue to work to pass this legislation next year in Olympia."
