PPC writers, publisher win WNPA awards

Two Pacific Publishing Co. writers received awards in the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2013 Better Newspaper Contest, which were announced on Oct. 4.

“Roundabout” columnist Matthew Wilemski won second place for Best Humorous Column for “Getting a Leg Up on Male Balding,” “Who’s Doing the Trick-or-Treating This Halloween?” and “Resolving to Make Other People’s Resolutions.”

Wilemski placed third for Best General Interest Column for “Warning: Your Health Care May Be Bad for Your Health,” “A Permanent Hand Out?” and “Monsters, Onions and Other Christmas Traditions.”

Editor Vera M. Chan-Pool received second- and third-place awards for Best Story on the Arts, for “Finding Art in the Afterlife” and “The ‘Brothers Wong’ and Their Many Visions of Chinatown,” respectively. These two appeared in City Living Seattle (citylivingseattle.com), an associate publication of Queen Anne & Magnolia News.

Also, former publisher Mike Dillon, who left his position at the end of June 2013 after 21 years, was named the 2013 winner of the Miles Turnbull Master Editor-Publisher award.
