The annual Magnolia Summer Festival and Art show, whichis held the first weekend in August, is a fond tradition in the com-munity. And a key part of the festival is the poster contest!
Artists are invited to submit a piece of artwork or design to grace the festival poster, postcard and the cover of the festival program. The winning piece also will be featured in other print media and publicity.
The winner is offered a free booth at the Summer Festival if desired.
Any submission that is evocative of spirit of Magnolia, its festival and its people is welcome. In years past the festival covers have been greatly admired and coveted for framing.
The deadline for submitting poster entries is May 14.
Another highlight of the festival is a juried art show. Those with an artistic bent are urged to join the fun and submit from one to three pieces of work showcasing their talents for the public and judges to see and admire. Fine-art vendors with original, quality art products are being solicited. No entry fee is required, and focus is on affordable art; the value of the work is to be under $100 each, and the artist is to supply a display rack.
A 20-percent commission fee applies to all sales, and projects are to be sleeved, with a maximum of 20 pieces from each artist.
Cash prizes are awarded to youth and adults for each media and age category. All ages are encouraged to participate. The award presentation is held at Magnolia playfield on Aug. 4 on the Main Stage at 2:30 p.m.
Deadline for registration for the art show is July 15.
Art-show activities include the opportunity to view artists creating their work. An area for youth to create their own work with paint and brushes is provided. Participants' work is then displayed. This is a not-to-be-missed event, drawing large numbers of participants as well as enthusiastic art patrons.
Co-chairs of the event are Jeniene Kroeger and Andrew Parker. Reach them by phoning 284-5836 or e-mailing magnoliaartshow.hotmail.com
