Spring is wonderfully deafening. All you have to do is head over to almost any area playing field and the baritone incantations of "batter up!" will resonate in your ears to the days of yore.
In operation since 1984, Kirkland Baseball Commission (part of the PONY League) is perpetuating those glory days of spring and summer baseball. In existence since 1984, the league plays at four Kirkland fields and operates the concession at Lee Johnson Field. Commissioner Martin Morgan encourages everyone to come out and "have the best hamburgers in Kirkland."
The league is planning to host a Memorial Day tournament for 13-14 year-olds and a regional Colt (15-16 year-olds) tourney in mid-July. Check www.kirkland-baseball.org for more information.
There are three different club levels: Pony (13 - 14 years old), Colt (15-16), and Palomino (17-19). The palomino teams will begin in May. Interested players should check the Web site.
The pony level is separated into two leagues: Cascade and Olympic. Olympic ball requires more of a commitment by the players and coaches. Cascade ball is intended to be more instructional in nature without the emphasis on strict competition.
As of April 23, the standings in the Pony Cascade division are:
Lux Homes (7-2)
Shinstrom Norman (7-3)
Hector's (6-3)
Lee Johnson Mazda (4-4)
All Wood Recycling (2-8)
Burgermaster (1-5) (through April 21)
As of April 23, the standings in the Pony Olympic division are:
Lee Johnson (5-8)
White Swan (11-3)
