Police Blotter 6/3/09

Angels and demons

Just after midnight on Sunday the 17th, officers received reports of a car racing up and down Williams Ave. W. Another citizen notified 911 that the driver was his bi-polar ex-wife.

On the heels of that report came a message that a woman whose name matched that of the suspect had just left the West Precinct. It seems an angel had "told her" she'd find her 15-year-old daughter there. Searching the area, officers found the woman behind the wheel of her car, blocking traffic at Gilman and Emerson and took her into protective custody after she told them of the angel visitation.

But in an unexpected twist, a passerby approached and said that as he had been walking on Gilman, the woman's car had come "flying" down a side street, skidded to a stop, slid sideways, and almost hit him. The suspect then cranked the stereo and sped away. Moments later, the car was back, speeding straight at him. The man had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

The 50-year-old woman was booked into King County Jail for investigation of reckless driving, with a referral to Mental Health Court.

Not Avon

Monday afternoon around 12:30, in the 3000 block of W. Emerson, a resident was at home but decided to ignore the ring of the doorbell. It was soon followed by a pounding. Looking out a window, the homeowner saw a woman peering into the house windows.

Ten minutes later, a man rattled the exterior kitchen door but ran off when he saw the victim. Both suspects were Caucasian.

The woman had a medium build and blond or strawberry hair in a ponytail. The man was in his 20s, of slim build, and wore a black baseball cap, and a baggy gray sweatshirt.

Welcome

At the end of his 12-step meeting, a man invited some of his fellow members over to his place to watch baseball. After they left, he realized some of his belongings were missing. The victim admitted to officers that he didn't really know the people that well.

He said, she said

Early Monday, the 18th, in the 500 block of 3rd W., a woman called 911 to say she had been assaulted by a man who was still in the apartment. When officers arrived and stood outside they could hear an obviously intoxicated woman yelling. They brought her out, where she slurred her words, smelled of alcohol, and spoke incoherently of bruising and assault.

Officers saw no fresh marks, and the woman's story changed constantly. Going inside, they spoke with the male half of the couple, who was calm and polite-and according to the officer, "frail." He was the actual occupant of the apartment. He denied striking the woman and said that she had struck him. Officers called the detox van to pick up the woman.

I spy

The area around 13th and Gilman saw several car break-ins recently. On the 17th, around 4 a.m., a woman smoking a cigarette on her balcony saw a black Mazda stop near that corner. A white male passenger in his 20s exited the vehicle, smashed the window of a nearby car, and grabbed something out of the back seat. The suspect was getting ready to smash another window when he apparently heard the witness gasp. He quickly returned to the Mazda, which drove off northbound on 13th W. The suspect had medium-length, curly blond hair and wore a plaid shirt and jeans.

Around this same time, in the 500 block of 1st W., a couple was climbing into their car. Suddenly the rear window shattered-broken by a beer bottle that had likely been thrown from a nearby balcony. Estimated damage: $400.

MIA

At On the Boards (100 W. Roy), a prop WWII-era AK-47 went missing after a performance on May 15th. It had a wood pistol grip, stock, and fore grip and a leather strap.

DOA

On Florentia St., a 57-year-old was pronounced dead after he suffered a respiratory seizure. A friend said that the medics had revived the victim at least ten times in the past after similar episodes-which often occurred after the victim smoked crack cocaine. He also stated that the victim had been "clean and sober" following a 35-year addiction. His faith in his friend may have been tempered when the medical investigator searched the victim's pockets and found a crack pipe and two rocks of cocaine.

Don't be so touchy

A 23-year-old woman felt the need to make a police report after ongoing sexual harassment by her boss at a local business. In the most recent incident, on May 12th, he allegedly snuck up from behind, reached inside her pants and grabbed her underwear, holding her against a wall for about 20 seconds. The victim left work immediately and has not returned.

Help yourself

While he was out of state on a fishing job, a local man allowed a "friend" to live aboard his boat at Salmon Bay Marina. When he returned on May 11th, he discovered that his pal had left, along with the victim's guitar, generator, mandolin, tool box, and a .44 Magnum.

But the light-fingered fellow did leave several items of interest behind: pawn shop receipts for all of the items (except the gun). The victim called the stores (all in Tacoma) and was happy to learn that most of his possessions were still in the shops.

Departing gifts

The house mates in 2100 block of Dexter Ave. N hadn't been getting along, so one decided to move out. Most of her belongings had already been moved, but a few remained behind, and she was to come and get them on a recent Sunday.

But it seems she came by early-on Saturday--while her roommate was at work. When he got home he discovered that she had not only taken her own items, but a couple of his as well: a laptop computer and a marijuana stash.
