Peter Kirk students raise money for tsunami victims

Peter Kirk students returned from their holiday vacation with giving on their minds. In response to the destruction caused by the tsunami in Southeast Asia, Peter Kirk's student council voted to organize a coin collection with all proceeds benefiting tsunami victims. The program will continue throughout the month of January. In the first three days alone, the kids raised over $700! All funds collected will be divided evenly between Northwest Medical Team International Inc. and Save the Children Organization.

The students' coin drive is a continuation of their good works for the community both here and abroad. In December students supported the Starbucks at Carillon Point's Holiday Angel Joy Drive. Over 80 new books and toys were collected, wrapped and delivered to children in area hospitals.

Peter Kirk also participated in the Sister Schools Program, which collects books, clothes, school supplies and health supplies for schools in Uganda. Students also adopted four families through the KITH "Adopt A Family" program, providing meals and gifts for those families.

For two weeks, students collected the needed supplies which were then sorted and shipped to Uganda for distribution. Terry McGill, the program's founder, will return to Peter Kirk in the spring to show students the impact of their generosity through a slide show. Peter Kirk students will also have an opportunity to start a pen pal program with a Ugandan student.

Peter Kirk students continue to enjoy many enrichment programs sponsored by its PTSA. Peter Kirk's Artist in Residence program invited cartoonist Jeff Johnson to teach his techniques to 6th graders. Returning artist Mary Wat-son taught guided drawing to 2nd and 5th graders. Peter Kirk's PTSA will also sponsor another session of afternoon Japanese, Spanish and Mandarin classes for interested students. In addition, students may sign up for a sculpture class taught by a Peter Kirk parent, or participate in after school science programs.

Pre-production is beginning on the Peter Kirk PTSA and Studio East production of Snow White and the Black Forest. The play is open to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. The performances will be held March 25 and 26 at Lake Washington High School.

Cookies for a Cause

Meghan and Alex Demeter, both Peter Kirk students, had decided to donate $50 of their Christmas money to the tsunami victims. They wanted to raise additional funds and enlisted friends Shawna and Rachel to help in a cookie drive, aptly named "Cookies for a Cause." On January 2, they sold homemade chocolate chip cookies in front of Heritage Hall on Market Street in Kirkland. Lots of walkers for a sunny stroll donated money (without taking cookies!) Their goal was $200 but they raised $320 in about two hours, all of which was donated to World Vision.

Says Alex, "I felt good that we were helping to save people's lives from the tsunami disaster."

Meghan adds: "I wanted to do this because I though what if we had that tsunami here, we would have warnings and all those lives wouldn't have been lost. I wanted to make sure they have enough food and water to help them until they get back on the[[In-content Ad]]
