Park On: Governor's race

Summer was an exciting time! With the Beijing Olympics, John Edwards' affair, Republican John McCain's political ad, which compares Paris Hilton and Britney Spears to Barack Obama, how can Americans keep up? Of course the international and national hoopla saturates much of the media, Washington State has its own excitement.

With the Washington state governnor's race picking up steam, political ads from both Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi continue to attack one another. Rossi challenges Gregoire on the same issues he did back in the 2004: controlling state's legislature spending, cutting taxes and improving the business climate. While Gregoire makes sure voters remember her 38 years of state government experience.

Political ads aside, recent polls have called the gubernatorial race too close to call. Last October, only 50 percent of Washingtonians approved of Gregoire's job, while leading Rossi with only 3 or 4 points. In April, a Rasmussen Report gave the Democratic incumbent a tiny edge over Rossi, 47% to 46%. This past month, an Elway poll gives Gregoire a 16-point lead. Plus, another survey from King 5 and SurveyUSA gives Gregoire lead of 50% to 48%.

The last four governors have been Democrats, which means the last time Washington had a Republican governor was back in 1985. Twenty-three years seems to be a long time for any political party to be in power. So while Rossi's chance to break Democratic dominance nears, Gregoire fights to keep her party's reign.

Democrats, Republicans, and other voters, who remain undecided, will deliver the fate of the candidates in November. What will be the most important issue for voters: a deflated economy, affordable health care, education, state income tax, party affiliation? Why not make a move? It's anybody's game.
