New Queen Anne Art Walk more focused, diverse

The Hill will showcase a new Queen Anne Art Walk featuring more artists, a chance to hear artists speak about their work and a raffle prize at the end of the night.

"This is the first time we've done it as a one-day event," said Lauren Adler a volunteer organizing the event. "We thought it would be more powerful if we did one focused event and put all our efforts and resources toward that one event."

Adler, an Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association member who owns Chocolopolis on the Hill, said the Art Walk used to be spread throughout the summer with artists work changing throughout the summer months. But with not enough coordination, interest and participation, the Art Walk became inconsistent. Several merchants on the Hill got together to figure out ways to coordinate it better.

One of the ways agreed upon to add uniformity to the event is the inclusion of artists speaking at businesses throughout the evening on a rolling schedule. The schedule will allow visitors more chances to hear artists speak.

Twelve merchants of UQAMA are participating, including Eat Local, Queen Anne Dispatch, Skookum and Julia's. Other participants include Queen Anne Frame & Avenue Arts, Queen Anne Books, Hilltop Yarn, Blue Highway Games, Chocolopolis, Lily's Pampering Salon and Part Boutique, Urban Kids Play and the Fountainhead Gallery. Combined, the venues will exhibit the work of 18 local artists - featuring a wide array of mediums and styles, from pottery and photography to painting and illustration.

Adler hopes the wider range of art, presentations and a raffle will bring more visitors. On the night of the event there will be Art Walk Passport Cards available at all the participating businesses and anyone who gets their card stamped or signed at all the locations may enter their cards in a raffle at Chocolopolis, where the winner will be announced at 8:30 p.m. Prizes are donated from UQAMA participants.

"My biggest thing is I'm curious to see what kind of a turnout we have," Adler said. "I'm excited because I feel like we've done everything we can to have a good turnout. I feel like the word's gotten out."

The event starts at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, with a loose ending time since businesses have different closing hours.[[In-content Ad]]
