Nancy's Sewing Basket, 2221 Queen Anne Ave. N. is celebrating their 34th year.
John and Jackie Rossi, with their daughter Nancy Berrington, opened the store in 1978 so that anyone needing a spool of thread or a zipper didn’t have to leave the Hill.
In an age of dwindling fabric stores, Nancy’s is still doing it.
The original location assumed the space formerly occupied by Elsie's Dime Store, now Caffe Ladro; over the years the Rossi's expanded until they purchased the lot in their current spot and built their new store in 1991.
John Rossi was instrumental in having the trees planted on Queen Anne Avenue. The photo above shows him in front of his store in 1978 on a treeless street, where he could be found every morning sweeping the sidewalk and talking to passerby.
