M&Ms Music and Musings: Enter the Diamond

Apparently the wires got crossed at McPublicRelations, the outfit that runs the marketing and touring of the ever-so-serious career of Neil Diamond. QAMagNews asked for a ticket to review the show and was repeatedly told "we're working on it, working on it." Working on what? You either have the tickets or you don't. My suspicion is that they wanted to be sure entities and egos with greater pull than publications in the very neighborhood that supports KeyArena, would be assured tickets should they need them at the last minute. I can understand that. The music business is a business. Period. But c'mon. Get over yourselves.

So no review of the almighty Neil Diamond, who just weeks ago sucked so horribly at a stop in Cincinnati that he offered to give people their money back. Good for him. At least he's big enough to admit that when he sucks, he sucks.

And let's be honest, Diamond is done. Just play the hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s and then beat it back to the hotel. Nobody wants to hear the new stuff. That goes for all the other big groups that try to return to the stage as a characature of what they once were.

I know, it sounds a bit harsh, but it's the truth. He should just produce or write children's books or enjoy his retirement. Enough singing those sappy love songs. Just get a condo in New York, maybe snag some season tickets to the Yankees at their new stadium and take it easy. Watch cartoons in bed....whatever.

In other news, Weezer is coming to the Key in Oct. 11. Now this is a band in its prime. They're heavily influenced by Nirvana and the lead singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo (what kind of a name is that? I'm guessing his sister's name is Estuaries Gregoire) has similar charisma to that of the late great Kurt Cobain. They'd be worth checking out. They continually push toward new sounds and take chances. That's what it's all about.

Tickets are still available, too. Hopefully, I'll see you there - unless McPublicRelations is in charge.
