'Michael's Birds' have landed at Northwest Craft Center

After 30 years, Michael Kaufman opened his box of Zen-like bird paintings and let them out.

The 73-year-old Queen Anne resident's sumi ink images are on display at the Northwest Crafts Center and Gallery, west of the International Fountain at the Seattle Center, through Sept. 30.

Kaufman, a prize-winning photographer, painted his birds in 1977 while living in San Francisco. Completing 10 to 20 brush paintings of his imaginary feathered friends each night, Kaufman says he woke in the mornings to find them spread on the floor like a flock. He then packed his artwork into a box and, with his other belongings, moved to Japan, where he lived for a decade. Kaufman opened the box for the first time last summer.

The gallery is open daily, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Mondays.
