Met Market scored early and often to take a 10-1 victory over visiting, and previously undefeated, United Warehouse of Magnolia.
UW hurlers had difficulty finding the plate early. Five walks and two key hits in the home half of the first lead to three Met runs.
Colin Thompson walked to lead-off the inning then promptly stole second. After a strikeout, converted short stop Davis Lohman lined sharply to left. Thompson got caught in a rundown as he attempted to score moving Lohman to second. Starting pitcher Drew Higgins banged another single scoring Lohman. Two more scored on four consecutive walks.
That's all the run support Higgins needed. He was masterful on the mound giving up one run, two hits and striking out eight through five on just seventy-four pitches. Lucas Ford closed the game with twelve pitches.
"DH (Higgins) set the tone for the game", said Ford. "He was throwing strikes, mixing it up and kept those guys off balance the whole game.
Pressure was then on me to keep up the good work when coach asked me to finish the game. It was a good team win".
Met also played solid defense. Two hard hit grounders were snagged by second baseman Andrew Cline stopping any idea of a threat by the visitors from Magnolia.
A happy Cline stated, "One of those grounders was hit real hard and bounced up into my chest. There was a lot of time to pick it up and get the runner at first. You could tell that the play let some air out of their sails. I was glad I was able to contribute to our win".
Met stars at the plate included Higgins who went four-for-four, and Lohman, Ford and Thomson with two hits apiece. Ford nearly left the yard with a long, double to deep left in the third. Nick Nishi had his first double of the season, and Luke Wicks had his first big league hit.
Met next hosts Kens on Monday.
