As part of this year's Seattle International Film Festival, Congressman Jim McDermott will join a special screening of Sandy Cioffi's "Sweet Crude," a documentary about Nigeria's Niger Delta.
The documentary tells the largely unknown story behind today's increasingly urgent headlines from a volatile region where people are desperate and unrest is growing following 50 years of crude oil extraction. The extraction has left residents both impoverished and in a decimated environment.
After decades of nonviolent protest and unfulfilled promises, a growing militancy is kidnapping oil workers and sabotaging pipelines in an effort to be heard. Currently, more than 10 percent of U.S oil comes from the Niger Delta and is expected to grow to 20 percent.
McDermott will participate in an interactive Q&A session with Cioffi and one of the film's key characters, Nigerian-native Joel Bisina on Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. The film will be screened at the Neptune Theatre on Friday, June 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m.
Tickets are $10 and available online at www.seattlefilm.org. For more information on the film visit www.sweetcrudemovie.com.
