Tu Nhat Ma, an eighth-grader at McClure Middle School, has been awarded an Assistance League Scholarship for 2009.
Tu will use her scholarship at the University of Washington Summer Youth Program to study writing.
Tu is an immigrant from Vietnam who moved to the United States five years ago. She is an active volunteer and a member of the Young Hero's program and the WEB program at McClure.
Tu's future plans include perfecting her English and, eventually, law school.
The nonprofit Assistance League of Seattle awards numerous scholarships for summer extracurricular programs including arts, science, music, journalism, math and computers since 2008. All middle-school students are urged to apply every February for the many available awards.
