Food bank clients in Magnolia can now receive Helping Harvest vouchers to use for shopping at the Magnolia Farmers Market. This summer's voucher program is funded by donations from the Magnolia Community Club and the Magnolia Community Center Advisory Council.
The $2 vouchers are given away free to families in need by Catharine Blaine K-8 and Lawton Elementary schools as well as Daybreak Star Center. Exchangeable for all foods sold at the Magnolia Farmers Market, they are an especially useful resource for low-income shoppers because they can be used for items that Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) coupons may not cover.
In presenting the Magnolia Community Club's $500 donation to market manager Molly Burke, President Nancy Rogers noted that the Helping Harvest program is a welcome additional resource for low-income shoppers, especially now that the Magnolia Helpline and the Queen Anne Food Bank have closed. The Ballard Food Bank is the only local food bank now serving Magnolia, Queen Anne and Ballard.
The Helping Harvest program was started by the University District Food Bank as a way to give back to the farmers who donate thousands of pounds of produce every year to local food banks. Magnolia's market vendors donate their extra food to the Seattle Children's Home in Queen Anne.
To receive Helping Harvest vouchers, families may contact Molly Burke at 371-7427.
