In a truly surprising turn of events, Greg Nickels is out as mayor of Seattle.
The News had endorsed Nickels and Joe Mallahan as the two candidates to push through last week's primary. Joe made it, as was expected. But Mike McGinn took the other slot - even though Nickels was the incumbent and had out fundraised McGinn by $494,801. The official results, incidentally, will be released Sept. 2. It was a true indicator of how Seattleites were feeling about Nickels - even though a KING-5 TV poll, showed him with a plurality of 22 percent of the vote. Nickels did not handle well the transportation impasse caused by last winter's snowstorm. And perhaps his unchecked zeal in ushering in dozens of mixed use development projects, which added to the city's density and eroded the individuality of neighborhoods, contributed to his downfall. The people have spoken.[[In-content Ad]]
