When it was released in 2008, the documentary, “Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood,” produced by the Media Education Foundation, caused a stir. The movie laid bare the multi-billion dollar marketing machine aimed at children.
Magnolia United Church of Christ will show the movie Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. in partnership with Magnolia Cooperative Preschool. The event is free.
“We live in an affluent neighborhood,” said Scott Ward, the church’s Director of Community Life, who arranged the screening. “There’s a lot of consumerism here.”
Of the movie, Ward said: “I came away with the idea that it’s important to instill other values in our kids. What I liked about the film was that it gives ideas about how to counteract it (consumerism). It’s about paying attention to your kids and not having the TV babysit your kids.”
Magnolia United Church of Christ is at 3555 W. McGraw St.
