Magnolia History, take two

Magnolians have followed the making of a new book of Magnolia history over the past year through this column in the Magnolia News. We are happy to have the Queen Anne audience join us in the making of more Magnolia history.

"Magnolia: Memories & Milestones," published in 2000, was designed with the concept that subsequent books of Magnolia tales and treasures would be written. This second book presents all new material primarily in the time period of 1920 through 1940.

Some 21 volunteer writers tell of their lives and times in Magnolia, or have done academic research on such subjects as the history of Fort Lawton and the Lighthouse. There are new archival photos, and World War II weaves its way through the book as it did in the lives of Magnolians and Americans.

Because of the complexity of this book, our spring release looks to be more of a fall celebration. We are in the design phase now, with editors, proofreaders and me, the project manager, wrestling with tighter copyright laws, properly crediting photos, the concept of keeping the writing in the voice of the author, keeping research articles factually correct and interesting and presenting to the community a book as elegant and eloquent as the first.

In future columns we will share excerpts and photos, let you know of any pre-sale readings or events, and take you along for an insider's look at making Magnolia history.

Books are on sale now at a pre-sale price.
