Magnolia United Church of Christ (MUCC) has been awarded the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) Energy Star rating for 2013. It is only one of 38 houses of worship in the country to receive the energy saving award.
In 2007, MUCC (3555 W. McGraw St.) became a Greening Congregation in partnership with Earth Ministry, a nonprofit organization committed to engaging the Christian community in environmental stewardship. This partnership led the members to improve the energy efficiency of the 22,000-square-foot facility.
Buildings or electronic devices carrying the Energy Star service mark generally use 20- to 30-percent less energy than required by federal standards.
With a required score of 80 or greater to become an Energy Star facility, MUCC scored 86.
The EPA requires re-application each year to remain current.
