Magnolia Chorale welcomes new director

Magnolia Chorale tunes up for a new season with a new director. She is Heather MacLaughlin Garbes, holder of a master's in choral conducting and a candidate for doctor of musical arts at the University of Washington, where she conducts the University Singers and the Summer Chorale.

The theme Garbes has selected for the December concert, entitled "Winter Light," focuses on how light and darkness affect our lives in profound ways, from being a beacon to a lost soul to having it represent the loss of the day or the hope for the future.

The center of the concert will be Francisco Durante's "Magnificat," accompanied by a string chamber orchestra. Also on the program will be Morten Lauridsen's "O Nata Lux" and André Thomas' "Keep Your Lamps," as well as traditional holiday pieces such as "Huron Carol" and "Lirum, Lirum."

Chorale rehearsals begin Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Magnolia United Church of Christ, 3555 W. McGraw St. For all who would like to sing with the Chorale, there will be a sectional placement interview at 4 p.m. that day. (Be able to carry a tune, but mostly just want to sing). Contact Bill Zachary, 283-8078, to schedule an interview time.

Regular rehearsal times are Sunday evenings from Sept. 16 through Nov. 25, 7-9:15 p.m. Holiday concerts will be on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
