Writing a book for children, like writing a good haiku, looks easy, but many a high-flown, professional writer has broken their nib at the attempt.
Magnolia resident Katherine Pryor has always wanted to write a children’s book. And now she has.
The inspiration for Pryor’s “Sylvia’s Spinach,” a picture book for ages 3 to 7, is born out of the food literacy movement and takes on a big challenge: changing youthful perspectives on vegetables.
Pryor, 34, will appear at Magnolia’s Bookstore on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. for a story time and book signing. Magnolia’s Bookstore is at 306 W. McGraw St.
New York City resident Anna Raff illustrated the book.
Pryer, who has a master’s degree from Antioch University in Environment and Community, is co-founder of South Park Fresh Starts, which grows vegetables for Providence Regina Food Bank. She also manages a program bringing local and healthy food to statewide hospitals and has spent time in the classrooms.
“I wanted to write a story from the kids’ point of view,” Pryor said, noting it is a great thing “when you have young kids and can get them to have a passionate engagement for a healthier life.”
The book is published by Readers to Eaters, a local publisher dedicated to food literacy.
