Local transportation issues up for discussion

Queen Anne Community Council Transportation Committee met March 28. to assess Seattle Center transportation and other major capital improvements.

The committee discussed several proposals for major capital improvements at Seattle Center that are currently under discussion by the Seattle Center Century 21 Committee. Also, there are several transportation opportunities that may open up for Queen Anne/Uptown during the ongoing planning process for the next decade of Seattle Center's redevelopment. Among them are a mass-transit link to Capitol Hill, retention of the historic Seattle Monorail, Bus Rapid Transit connections to Seattle Center and Uptown Urban Center and new bike/pedestrian routes.

John Coney, Transportation co-chair, will discuss transit, bike, pedestrian and automobile access to Seattle Center and Uptown.

He also will detail the Century 21 deliberations on major capital improvements, including Center House renovation or relocation, Memorial Stadium redevelopment, Mercer Street garage site redevelopment, KeyArena adaptation as a concert facility, fate of the Northwest Rooms and other items.

No decisions have been made to include any items in the redevelopment of Seattle Center, but the Century 21 Committee will submit its final list of capital-improvement projects to the mayor this June, if deliberations remain on schedule.

Queen Anne Community Council expects to hear from Seattle Center staff about the Century 21 recommendations in the near future. This Trans-portation Committee meeting is a way for Queen Anners and Uptown stakeholders to receive background information on the complex proposals that will eventually come to the city council.
