The American Meter and Appliance men’s softball team is creating a dynasty. The team clinched its third straight Greenlake Men’s Masters Championship title on Sunday, July 24.
American Meter got off to a slow start this year, bringing into question as to whether they were going to be able to keep their championship streak alive. But after several rainouts and mid-season setbacks, this team of mainly Queen Anne residents and local business owners peaked at just the right time. They swept all of three their playoff games and defended their championship title for a third straight year.
American Meter fell behind in both the semifinal and championship games, but came back to win both. In the championship game, American Meter was behind 12-4, before battling back to win the game, 18-16.
“That shows our experience,” team member Duke Vogt said.
Local business owners Chris Togawa (CTIA Insurance), George O’Connor (Ken’s Market), and Jim Merlino (American Meter and Appliance) have been loyal supporters of Queen Anne athletics and this team for many years. Residents Mike Vizzare, John Vizzare, Joe Moriarty, Rick Smith, and Vogt played on the team and made major contributions.
Coaches Mark Himmelman and Spike Hendrickson were instrumental in the team getting this three-peat. American Meter and Appliance hopes to defend its title for a fourth year in a row next season.
