QUEEN ANNE #3, April 6, 2009 - Paper or plastic? The Met Market bats were quiet as they went down 7-1 to Kens Market in the season-opening game of the Queen Anne Little League season.
Ken'sstarter, Tyler Hoogendorn, pitched a solid game by going four innings, striking out nine Met batters and allowing just one run on two hits.
Hoogendorn was shaky early by allowing one run in the top half of the first. Met starting pitcher Jake Cameron reached on an infield error to lead off the game. He quickly moved to third on two passed balls, then scored on a fielder's choice.
"(Hoogendorn) stayed around the plate so I just put my bat on the ball," Cameron said. "Both teams showed signs of opening-day jitters, but we'll be fine. We have a veteran team ,and we can't wait to get back on the field!"
Ken's answered Met in the bottom of the first. Two walks and a single led to three runs, which Ken's repeated in their half of the second inning. That was all Hoogendorn needed as he and two Ken's reliever shut the Checkers down.

Met Market rallies for win
Queen Anne #3, April 8, 2009 - Met Market, behind a stellar pitching performance by Drew Higgins, scored six runs in their half of the fifth for the win.
"It was a pitching duel most of the way," Higgins said. "Andrew was pitching well and kept us off the bases early on. They went to their bullpen which gave us a chance to show some offense," Higgins added about VI starter Andrew Ross.
VI scored their only run in the top half of the fourth with a walk, two passed balls and a fielder's choice. That set the stage of Met's big fifth.
After one out, shortstop Jake Cameron was hit by a pitch. He moved to second when third baseman Colin Thompson walked after an eight-pitch at-bat. Higgins singled to score Cameron to tie the game. Thompson then scored on Joe Volk's infield single giving Met a one-run lead. The big blow was delivered by Adam Schooler-Reed whose sharp bases-loaded single to center scored two putting the game out of reach.
Higgins threw 87 pitches through four-and-two-thirds, giving up one hit, one run and striking out 11. Closer Joe Volk was equally as effective, shutting VI down in the sixth with two strikeouts.
Met next hosts Magnolia's McAdams Wright Regan on Saturday.

Another decisive win for Metropolitan Market
QUEEN ANNE #3, SEATTLE, APRIL 11, 2009 - The Checkers continued where they left off by scoring early to defeat Magnolia's McAdams Wright Regan 7-1.
Met's offense pounced on MWR starter Tim Torres in the home half of the first. Lead-off batter Jake Cameron lined sharply to left, followed by Colin Thompson's solid single up the middle. Starting pitcher Davis Lohman ripped a double to left scoring Cameron. Thompson scored on Nick Nishi's infield single and Lohman scored on a fielder's choice.
That was all Met needed as Lohman struck out five of the nine batters he faced. Long reliever Cameron was equally as effective shutting down MWR the rest of the way.
"My breaking ball was working well today," Lohman said. "I was able to establish my fast ball early, and my slider kept them off balance. I had a few bullpen sessions (with my dad) during spring training on Kauai and it proved to be helpful today."
Met center fielder Andrew Cline pulled off a rare feat with a straight steal of home in the third.
"Coach had a bunt sign on so I was ready to run," Cline said. "Adam (Schooler-Reed) turned to bunt but pulled back when he saw the pitch was off the plate. I was on my way so I just kept running. I guess their catcher didn't see me coming."
Met was led at the plate by Lohman's two doubles and one triple. While the win was gratifying, Met closer Joe Volk was put on the 15-day DL with a laceration of his throwing hand.
Met next hosts Best Plumbing on Wednesday.
