The Sweet 16 of Mini-Max open the season with a bang

Zeek's Pizza 0

Mini-max Storage 0

April 18 - There were a lot of great hits, a lot of terrific plays in the field and a lot of happy faces Monday night, as the Mini-Max Storage softball team kicked off the 2005 season against the mighty Zeek's Pizza. As the home team, Mini-Max started the game in the field and in the first inning displayed some awesome defense. Sophie Beckley made a super play at second, fielding a tough grounder and throwing it to Francesca Martorano, who made a nice catch at first base for the out. Then, with the bases loaded and Zeek's poised to score, Ariana Busby grabbed a ground ball and touched third base, ending the inning and the threat. Busby also drove in the first run of the year in the bottom of the first with a single that drove Sophie home.

Mini-Max added five more runs, on eight hits, in the bottom of the second. Grace Corsi, Savannah Furia, Emma Hoyt, Marilyn Jones and Sage Nicholson all scored. Hannah Burnett drove in two of those runs with a hit in her very first at-bat of the season. Kate Williams and Morgan Cameron capped off the inning with a pair of singles that drove in the final two runs.

Mini-Max flashed a little more defense in the third inning when Zeek's scored four runs and might have scored more, had Hoyt not made a great play at second base. Hoyt fielded a tough ground ball and raced to second just ahead of the Zeek's runner, forcing her out and ending the inning.

The Mini-Max offense really caught fire in the fourth inning. Savannah Furia led off with a single. Hoyt followed with a double, which put runners on second and third. Jones singled home one run, and Maggie Orse then crushed a double to knock in another. Kristin Snow's single brought home the third run of the inning. Mini-Max put the game out of reach in the fifth inning after a couple of clutch hits by Sydney Anderson and Corsi.
