Lights On event will support after-school programs

A Lights On Afterschool Showcase and Awards Ceremony supporting afterschool programs will be held Thursday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. at John Muir Elementary School Auditorium, 3301 S. Horton St.

The event will be one of more than 60 Lights On Afterschool! events being held statewide as well as one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day-the seventh annual Lights On Afterschool Day, organized by the Afterschool Alliance.

School's Out Washington will partner with Seattle Public Schools' Office for Community Learning, John Muir Elementary School, Camp Fire USA, Powerful Schools and SOAR to sponsor the event.

California Governor Arnold "Governator" Schwarzenegger is chair of Lights On After-school again this year.

Speakers during the event will highlight the integral role of afterschool programs and the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to Washington State: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during out-of-school hours.

The event will include tae kwon do and mime performances showcasing the students from the afterschool programs at John Muir, induction of the 2nd annual Washington State Afterschool Hall of Fame honorees, testimonies by parents and students about the positive impact of afterschool programs on their lives and student-led tours of both the Camp Fire and Powerful Schools programs at John Muir.

Participants in the Lights On Afterschool event include Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools Raj Manhas, John Muir Elementary Principal Awnie Thompson, executive director of Powerful Schools Rebecca Sadinsky and Lisa Taylor of Seattle Public Schools' Office for Community Learning, as well as other officials, local business leaders, educators, parents and students.

The Afterschool Alliance is a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization supported by a group of public, private and nonprofit entities working to ensure that all children have access to afterschool programs by the year 2010. More information on Lights On Afterschool is available at www.afterschool-alliance.org.
