[Regarding “Words that Haunt,” Oct. 16:] Thank you so much for publishing this story about our Chief Sealth and Mr. [Henry] Smith. I love this speech of my great-grandfather, and I am thankful that there was a Mr. Smith who saved it for prosperity. Otherwise, we would not have known this beautiful speech — special words from a man who could see what was coming in the years ahead.
If [Chief Sealth] could look down and see what has happened to this land and the Duwamish people, I am sure he would cry....
