Letter edits leave out valuable information

(Editor's note: This is a clarification of the letter to the editor "Votes Don't Shake Out for Elevated Viaduct," which appeared in the Feb. 22 issue. It had been edited for length, so the author requested that the following be printed to further explain his stance.)Even though I included URLs for the websites I drew my conclusions from in hopes that fact-checkers could see that I was not merely ranting, there still was confusion.I was trying to make three points:1. We powerless, average people (who don't live downtown and/or develop property there) are being deceived. Points 2 and 3 explain how.2. Plans are to demolish the viaduct south of South King Street and replace it with side-by-side surface streets. Who decided this and why?3. The Moore Iacafano Goltsman report, commissioned by the mayor and City Council, failed to consider the only unbiased poll that was open to all and considered all options. For information on "Moving Forward in the South End," www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/Viaduct/southend.htm is the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) website. To read the 80-page "Alaskan Way Viaduct Stakeholder Interview Report," www.wsdot.wa.gov/NR/rdonlyres/1BFB8062-F832-4DAB-A4A4-6F14B76ABDE3/0/AWV_MIG_Interview_Report_Dec0712172007.pdf is the WSDOT website where I found it.Why was not also considered Pulitzer [Prize]-winning Dave Horsey's Saturday Spin question, whose results are found at seattlepi.nwsource.com/saturdayspin/181511_bqweb10.html? This was open to anyone who read about it in a public paper over several days, not restricted to a select few. More than 120 were passionate enough to vote; by a 30-to-1 margin, we saw either "fix it" (meaning retrofit) or "don't tear down the viaduct without rebuilding a better one." This is an exact-opposite deal-breaker than for the downtown interests but for a poll of twice as many people.Harvey FriedmanPhinney Ridge[[In-content Ad]]
