Leona (Lee) Lubin July 23, 1919-Jan. 18, 2013

Leona (Lee) Lubin, a longtime Magnolia resident, passed on Friday, January 18th, at Swedish Hospital following a brief illness.  She was 93 years old.

Lee was the fourth of Amanda and Edward Kinas’s five children, born on July 23rd, 1919, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  Lee was an exceptional student, graduating high school with honors at age 16.  In 1940, Lee boarded a train to a new adventure:  marrying her fiancé, Edward Lubin, who was residing in Portland, Oregon.  The two were married in Vancouver on August 3rd, 1940.  The newlyweds settled in Seattle prior to World War II, when Ed became a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  Following the war, the young couple settled in Aberdeen, Washington, where both their children were born.

Lee and Ed moved to Seattle in October 1952, purchasing a home on Magnolia.  While her two children were in school during the 1950s and 1960s, Lee was involved in Brownies, Girl Scouts, and activities at Magnolia Lutheran Church.

Lee prized time with friends and family, champagne, mimosas and Iowa popcorn, and keeping up with one favorite TV program, “Jeopardy.”  She was especially proud of being “a crack grammarian,” often being consulted by her two college-graduate children for correct grammar and spelling.

Lee and Ed operated Queen Anne Ace Hardware from 1964 until 1984, growing the store from a small, neighborhood general store to one stocking everything from housewares, to building supplies.  After retirement, Ed and Lee enjoyed traveling, journeying extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Australia.   Lee and Ed celebrated 67 years of marriage, until Ed’s death in 2007.

Lee is survived by her children, Sherry (Mike) Hassel of Goodyear, Arizona, and their daughter, Ellen of Madison, Wisconsin; Wayne (April) Lubin of Seattle and their son, Schuyler; and her beloved sister, Norma Langner of Wichita, Kansas.

A celebration of Lee’s life will be held at Magnolia Lutheran Church, 2414 - 31st Avenue West, on Saturday, February 16th, at 1 p.m.  Memorials may be made to Magnolia Lutheran Church in Lee’s memory.
