LAKE AND CENTRAL PARKING UPDATE
Last month, Ken Dueker, chair of the Parking Advisory Board, recommended that the Kirkland City Council suspend parking fees and time limits in the Lake and Central parking lot on Thursday evenings after 6 p.m. from May 3 through June 28.
This suspension is in response to the Kirkland Downtown's Weekends Start on Thursdays campaign - an effort to boost downtown retail volume.
The two-month period is considered a trial run, and will likely be continued for the duration of the Weekends Start on Thursdays campaign, according to the Kirkland Downtown Association. At a March 8 meeting, Dick Beazell, executive director of the KDA, requested the suspension through Oct. 11, when the campaign will end.
Previously, the Parking Advisory Board had been evaluating options on converting currently free stalls to pay slots in the Lake and Central lot.
At a study session on April 17, the council decided it needed more information and to revisit the issue in upcoming months. As of now, the lot will stay the same, with four-hour pay parking in the middle of the lot and free, two-hour parking on the perimeter.
KDA'S WEEKENDS START ON THURSDAY CAMPAIGN
The Kirkland Downtown Association has kicked off a program called, Weekends Start on Thursday, encouraging retailers to stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. As of the end of April, the KDA has 17 retailers signed up, with a goal of 20-25. If you are interested, please contact Julie Metteer at julie@kirklanddowntown.org.
