Getting your whole family involved in physical activity shouldn't require bribes or threats. If you plan it right - and create the right atmosphere - you can have them begging to exercise with you.
There are ways to spend time with your family and help keep your family healthy and fit.
Children learn from their parents. It is important to show kids that staying physically fit is necessary for their health. The key to successful family fitness is to keep it simple and fun for everyone. Make your activities a family tradition that everyone will look forward to. Moderate physical activity (combined with a healthy diet) will help protect members of your family from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and is a great way to relieve stress.
Before you start on your renewed commitment to fitness this spring, be sure that everyone in your family has the go-ahead from your family doctor.
Family fitness can come in a number of ways.
BIKING
This is a great heart-healthy activity to keep your family in shape. There are many exceptional biking trails in this area, such as the Burke-Gilman Trail. Most parks and recreation facilities also provide bike trails. It's a great way to spend family time and get the exercise you need all at the same time.
HIKING
The great thing about hiking is that hiking is walking. This means your whole family already knows how to do it! You don't need to go out and buy fancy hiking shoes; walking shoes are adequate for many trails in this area. Taking your kids hiking can be loads of fun and a great family experience. It's a good way to have them learn about nature, wildlife and the beauty of being outdoors. Keep it fun and plan ahead. While adults like hiking for the fresh air, scenery, and serenity ... kids may need an additional lure.
Even if you plan on doing a short hike, pack healthy snacks (such as granola or trail mix) or you can even make a full day of it with a picnic lunch. Also, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Your family hike can be something you do once a month or something you do weekly.
On days you want to stay close to home, go for a walk or a run.
HITTING THE SCHOOL TRACK
You can get the family excited about walking or running by going up to a school track. Make it competitive by racing or timing each other. Now, there is nothing wrong with going on a nice brisk walk around your neighborhood for 30 to 60 minutes, either. The kids may not be as excited to do this, so having them bring their skateboards or rollerblades may entice them.
With all the parks in Kirkland alone, there is no excuse not to go.
You can play catch, Frisbee, shoot hoops, play volleyball or badminton or kick a soccer ball around. Not only will you have some fun, but you build hand-eye or foot-eye coordination skills which is great for motor development.
If the weather isn't cooperating, stay inside and stay fit with exercise videos.
Choose exercise videos that every member of your family will enjoy. Or, if you're not sure what they'll like, let them take turns choosing. Search for that perfect DVD at your local library or online at sites like Amazon.com.
Is your husband a devoted golfer? There are workouts devoted to strengthening the muscles specifically used for playing golf. Even non-golfers will benefit from the exercises, and they might become motivated to try a new sport!
Do you have children who like to dance? There are a variety of dance-inspired workout videos, and some are specifically geared for younger audiences. There are even videos that mimic real dance instruction, complete with a teacher and classroom.
No matter what activity you choose, it is important to get your family moving. An active lifestyle is easy to maintain if you make it fun for yourself and your family.
Stay active!
