John Hay students, teachers, staff and parents, walked, jogged and ran for their school, all to help essential school programs. And fifth graders generated donations of food to help families in need.
The John Hay Move-a-thon is the schools annual Fall fundraiser, Oct. 16, saw students collecting pledges of canned goods and other donations from family, friends and neighbors that went to support the Spanish, music and One-on-One tutoring programs that have become a central part of student education at John Hay. Despite the weather, teachers and staff wore costumes, from Darth Vader to Princess Leia, and students wore their chartreuse Move-a-thon shirts, and ran a total of 4,077 laps around the school.
Abbey Party Rents donated tents that protected the parent volunteers and concession stand. Top Pot Doughnuts, QFC on Mercer Street in lower Queen Anne, Caffe Umbria, Noah's Bagels and Top Banana each donated snacks and refreshments. Several businesses in the community also sponsored the event and their names and logos were printed on Move-a-thon T-shirts. The students and staff received pedometers at the end of the day donated by State Farm Insurance.
The fifth-grade service project at John Hay also coincided with the Move-a-thon event. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, fifth graders, their teachers and parent volunteers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood with shopping bags requesting non-perishable items. A week later, items were picked up and brought to the Queen Anne Helpline, which put the items in its food bank that is used to help families in need.
