John Hay students place second in reading challenge

The “Smart Mustaches” team from John Hay Elementary School (201 Garfield St.) tied for second place with three other schools in The Seattle Public Library’s 18th-annual Global Reading Challenge on April 2.

The “Smart Mustaches” tied with Thurgood Marshall and Hawthorne elementary schools and Orca K-8 School. John Muir Elementary School won the city championship by one question.

A total of 360 teams of fourth and fifth-grade students from 45 Seattle Public Schools participated in the Global Reading Challenge reading contest.

After reading 10 books, children participate in semi-final and city final rounds of a Quiz Bowl game to determine Seattle’s champion team.

Each team has seven members.
