After nearly three years as editor of The Queen Anne and Magnolia News, Myke Folger is leaving to become a school teacher. His replacement is longtime magazine editor, Jeff Bond.
Folger came to The News by way of Seattle area magazines and newspapers where he has been writing and editing for more than 15 years. In his tenure with The News, Folger helped build a sense of community by focusing on schools, the arts and city-wide news. He enjoyed finding nuances in stories that would give readers glimpses into the often fascinating lives of neighbors and those working in the neighborhood. He also concentrated on building the website and getting more neighborhood voices into the newspaper.
Perhaps his biggest story came last year. It was a three-part series on the life and death of First Nation Tribal member John T. Williams. One of Folger's favorite stories was about the Conger family, who in 2008 set sail from the Elliott Bay Marina in Magnolia to exotic places around the world including New Zealand, where they live today. Folger is completing the Masters in Teaching program at Western Washington University and plans to be teaching high school or middle school in the Seattle area by September.
The new editor is a longtime Seattle journalist, a University of Washington alum and a former resident of Magnolia. Bond began his journalism career more than 20 years ago as a reporter at the Valley Daily News in Kent.
In 1994, Bond moved to Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, where he edited an English-language newspaper.
Since returning to Seattle, Bond edited Washington CEO magazine and Seattle Business magazine.
