Memoirist, poet and essayist Patricia Hampl has won Image magazine’s ninth annual Denise Levertov Award, named after one of the 20th century’s leading poets who lived the last years of her life in Seattle.
Hampl will be in Seattle for a reading and reception at 7 p.m. May 24, at 415 Westlake Ave. N.
The award is presented to an artist or creative writer whose body of work reflects a serious and sustained engagement with the Judeo-Christian tradition.
Hampl, who is on the faculty at the University of Minnesota, is the author of the memoir, “A Romantic Education,” and several other books of poetry and prose, including “Virgin Time,” a meditation on travel, St. Francis of Assisi and spirituality. Her most recent book, “The Florist’s Daughter,” made the New York Times list of “100 Notable Books for the Year” 2007.
The free event is co-sponsored by the Seattle Pacific University English Department, the Conference on Christianity and Literature, and the SPU MFA Program in Creative Writing. To register: http://imagejournal.org
