Hickman receives special award

During the recent USA Track & Field’s (USATF) Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet in Daytona Beach, Fla., longtime Queen Anne resident William Hickman was named the 2012 Robert Giegengack Award winner.

Having served USATF for nearly 40 years, Hickman is a certified masters-level official. He officiated at the 1984 Olympic Games and at five USA Olympic Trials. He was a member of the International Association of Athletics Federation’s Anti-Doping Commission from 1999 until 2003.

He is currently president of the Pacific Northwest Track & Field Association. He has served as a member of the USATF Rules of Competition Committee and the Law and Legislation Committee for more than 20 years.

Awarded by the USA Track & Field board of directors, the Robert Giegengack Award was established in 1982 in recognition of the late Yale University coach to showcase superior and outstanding contributions to the sport and the organization as an official, coach and administrator. It is USATF's highest award to a volunteer.

(USATF) is the national governing body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States.
