On Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation presented its coveted Denny Award to individuals and organizations for outstanding volunteer stewardship of Park's land.
Heron Habitat Helpers(HHH) of Kiwanis Ravine Park was one of three organizations selected for this honor and had just recently been granted the first Wildlife Sanctuary in the city of Seattle for the park.
The awards ceremony was held at the Armory Building at the south end of Lake Union and was the last public event before the Armory becomes the home for the Museum of History and Industry. There was a dinner preceding the ceremony.
Many of the winners had moving stories of volunteer dedication. HHH has been stewarding Kiwanis Ravine Park in north Magnolia for almost 10 years. The 16-acre park is home to Seattle's largest nesting colony of Great Blue Herons, with over 80 nests last summer. HHH is always looking for volunteers to assist its work.
