Students at McClure Middle School perform "Hee Haw Hay Ride" About 500 people filling the seats at the auditorium at Whitman Middle School. This Hee Haw isn't quite like the popular TV series, but more of a backwoodsy Romeo and Juliet tale. Two star-crossed lovers from feuding families have to weigh the power of love amid the hostile environment. "Love is somethin' special to me" sung by Lauren Turner and Luke Fabian is the big showstopper duet. The cast includes more than 50 students from sixth grade through eighth grade. The book is by Tim Kelly and the music and lyrics are by Bill Francoeur. This is McClure's 10th year of presenting musicals. They're presented at Whitman as McClure hasn't the space needed for such a big show.Director Cheryl Phillips said final performances at McClure have drawn big audiences. Last year, the school performed the horror comedy "Pom Pom Zombies," and performers had to stop a couple of times to let the audience finish laughing. For Hee Haw, Phillips has hired choreographer Emma Hassett who was trained at Cornish College of the Arts. Phillips is the shop teacher at McClure and is also the school's after-school drama teacher. The final performances are huge undertakings, but for Phillips, it's worth it."It's the highlight of our school year for everybody," she said.
