Hawaiian-style bar mitzvah, paper umbrellas and all

McGilvra Elementary School parents who contributed to the Aloha-themed auction in March celebrated at Kevin and Maria Cahoon's home on June 10 with a memorable margarita party.

Six couples worked tirelessly, grilling fajitas, bartending and creating beautiful tissue-paper corsages for the women to wear.

With candles flickering, cocktails flowing and conversation at a peak, a sudden blue flame caught everyone's attention. Poor Leeanne Rowlen and Susie Cobb were extinguished with Cuervo 1800 (which we wouldn't recommend). It seems a corsage got a little too close to the flame.

Everyone remained safe and unharmed, and festivities continued with one hot party blazing on until 2 a.m.

Was there really pole-dancing that evening in Canterbury?

Thunder leaves Leschi

Billy the Kid strikes again. Seattle's famed Billy Schumacher is back in the world of unlimited hydroplane racing - only this time it's by taking ownership of the former U-8 turbine-powered hydroplane.

Billy and his wife, Jane Suzick, will race under the number U-37 in the spirit of the original Miss Seattle of the 1950s.

Leschi residents for years, they sadly leave the shores of Lake Washington for a houseboat on Lake Union.

Watch for Miss Beacon Plumbing (the name of the boat in the Seattle/Tri-Cities area), and cheer on the one of Seattle's favorite couples this summer.

Attic attack

No one loves World Cup soccer as much as Mark Long, owner of The Attic alehouse and eatery in Madison Park. Otherwise, why would he be there serving breakfast at 6 a.m.?

Spotted in the lively, early morning crowd were area residents Terry Tazioli (Madrona) and the sassy Shawn Bounds (Madison Park) with a group of hotel buddies. They mingled with a veritable United Nations of fans cheering for Serbia and Montenegro vs. The Netherlands.

A breakfast special that day was the three-meat scramble, enough to fuel a team (or a heart attack).

How about a nice Hawaiian punch?

After a restful trip to the Hawaiian Islands, Martha E. Harris was inspired to create a Trader Vic's-style bar mitzvah for more than 300 guests, building palm trees with real fronds, fresh leis and plenty of miniature, paper umbrellas.

The always-creative and energetic Martha has added "event planner" to her title of florist and purveyor of lovely gifts.

This year's forecast for wedding themes? She says brides are moving away from bright colors and doing a clean look with creams and browns. Think Magnolia blossoms.

Accentuate the positive

In between her fiendish, daily workouts and managing a busy family of five, Broadmoor's Kristi Birk-hold is launching Couture Physique, a new brand of exercise apparel that is distinctively styled, better-fitting than conventional workout wear and technically advanced in its fabrics and construction.

Fresh on the scene of clothing design, Kristi high-tailed it to China with a sketch book and a dream.

Designed to be worn throughout the day, hot moms from L.A. to Bellevue will be able to purchase pieces beginning in mid-July at Nordstrom.

Noticed: 'Huff' stuff

Anyone notice Washington Park's Tom Skerritt on episodes of Showtime's weekly series "Huff"?

He plays Ben Huffstodt, the father of Dr. Craig "Huff" Huffstodt.

34th Avenue's border crossing

Would the overflow at the new French restaurant Cremant have anything to do with Dulces Latin Bistro now offering a three-course French dinner for $25?

Chef Julie Guerrero's Latin menu (Latin being defined by the fusion of French, Spanish and Italian influences) has been a favorite at this Madrona location for more than 10 years.

Cremant has had its fill of "foodie" guests, from chef Tom Douglas to Armandino Batali (Salumi) to Hsiao-Ching Chou (Seattle P-I) all in one evening.

Dolly West, an East-Central Seattle resident, has lived in Seattle for more than 25 years. Her hobbies include gardening, entertaining and writing.
