Seattle Parks Foundation has received a $100,000 gift from Group Health Cooperative for Lake Union Park, according to a press release from Parks communication director Todd Burley. The contribution will support building of the Group Health Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail along the west side of the park, a vital connection between this central park and nearby multi-use trails.
"As new neighbors in South Lake Union, we are proud to offer a contribution that highlights our commitment to promoting active lifestyles," said Scott Armstrong, Group Health CEO. "Lake Union Park will be a major attraction for our employees, city residents and visitors to Seattle."
Group Health, which co-owns the new Westlake/Terry Building with Vulcan, is moving its administrative headquarters after 20 years at the corner of Wall Street and Sixth Avenue. The city of Seattle purchased the land for Lake Union Park over the past 20 years, and it is administered by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Seattle Parks Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization, began raising private funds to develop this open space into a world-class waterfront park in 2003, and has since raised more than $17.3 million of the $20 million in private funds needed for the park.
Kimberly Bowen, deputy director for the foundation, expressed the hope that "Lake Union Park will become a hub for bicycle trails converging on the city's center, for families out for a weekend stroll and a launching point for kayaks."
The first phase of construction at Lake Union Park - including the new seawall, boardwalk, terraced steps and landscaping - will be completed by December 2007. The park is to be completed and open to the public by 2010.
