Get ready to rock! (the Rocking Chair Races, that is)

The Wallingford Community Senior Center is holding its 23rd-annual Rocking Chair Races on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You won't want to miss this unique event.

Races are organized into teams of five. Each team member rocks as many times as possible in five minutes. A counter is attached to the chair, and a computer records how many rocks each team achieves.

Depending on how many rocks per heat, the computer will determine who will hedge forward to the final "rock-off."

The center is hoping to have more than 20 teams compete this year.

Some teams did their own fund-raising prior to the race. Others are sponsored by local organizations that provide home care or other services to seniors.

Everyone, participating or not, is welcome to join the fun. Throughout the day there will be food, entertainment and a silent auction.

Fund-raising

Located on the bottom floor in the Good Shepard Center, 4649 Sunny-side Ave. N., the senior center makes use of its modest space, offering fitness classes, yoga, tai chi, computer classes, a variety of workshops, care-giver support groups and more.

The Rocking Chair Races event is the center's main fund-raiser. Because it competes with other organizations for the same pool of money, the senior center relies largely on community outreach and volunteer support. It receives some government funding from the city and county, while membership and program fees generate about 14 percent of the funding. Grants and private fund-raising are its main source of income.

Executive director Kathleen Cromp hopes the center's activities will "bring more people into the center," she said. "We want them to know we are here."
