One hundred girls, ages 6 to 12, headed to the Kirkland Boys & Girls Club for an All Girls Sports Day on Feb. 21. The girls, from clubs all over King County, rotated among three sports stations, trying their hand at ultimate football, handball and basketball.
Kate Starbird, a former Seattle Storm basketball player, coached the basketball station all morning and ran drills with the girls to teach them basketball fundamentals.
This was the fourth-annual All Girls Sports Day, an event designed to get young girls interested in sports and teach them about the importance of active lifestyles. Allstate Insurance was also there to present a check to the club.
After the girls covered each of the three stations, they refueled with pizza before they gathered in the gym to hear words of encouragement from the WNBA star. A group of the girls even challenged Kate (who holds the all-time career scoring record at Stanford University) to a free-throw contest. Our girls gave her some tough competition but in the end, the professional prevailed.
