Firm chosen to develop plans for Ursala Judkins Viewpoint

The Friends of Ursula Judkins Viewpoint/Smith Cove has selected the firm of Karen Kiest Landscape Architects to develop the schematic plans for the Ursula Judkins Viewpoint.

The $10,000 design contract, which is funded through the Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Match Fund program, will run for approximately three months.

Under the terms of the contract, Kiest's firm will create schematic plans for the city-designated viewpoint park in Magnolia. The landscape plans will set out the access and parking at the park, the amenities and features which will be created in the park, and layouts for future landscaping feature areas.

Friends of Ursula Judkins Viewpoint/Smith Cove Committee chair Elizabeth Campbell said in the organization's press release: "Selection of the landscape architect for our park was an exciting process. Competition was stiff for the slot to design the park.

"Ursula Judkins Viewpoint will be one of Seattle's premier view parks," Campbell continued, "so six of Seattle's leading landscape architect firms applied for the contract, including the firm that just completed the Olympic Sculpture Park. When the interviews of all the firms were over, the selection committee wished that they could hire all of the applicants, their qualifications and design ideas were that good."

Starting in April there will be a series of three public meetings held: one to solicit design ideas, one to refine design concepts and one to present the final design for the park.
