Farmers market opens but not in Valley as expected

The Capitol Hill Farmers Market has relocated to its new home with a new name, but not in Madison Valley as it had been expected.

The new Madison/Capitol Hill Farmers Market opened May 20, but with about half of its anticipated vendors because of the heavy rain and wind. Organizers, however, plan to have the market open with about 30 vendors on Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. year-round at the corner of East Madison Street and 20th Avenue East, near Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Organizer Jon Hegeman, who founded the Fremont Sunday Market, said he had investigated a lot across the street from City People's Garden Store in Madison Valley, but it is under development. Similarly, street use in Madison Park was discounted because of bus-route interruptions.

"It had been our ambition to be there [in the area]," Hegeman explained.

But he does cite the new location's benefits, primarily its close proximity to Madison Valley, the Central Area and Capitol Hill. "We are thankful for the space and the location we have," he said.

The farmers market has an open-ended agreement with Mount Zion church, as it owns the property the market is on.

"We're optimistic about the opportunities," he said. "The feedback we've received so far is enthusiastic, [so] the community support will be good. We look forward to growing the market and establishing relationships with the various communities."[[In-content Ad]]
