Farmers Insurance held off Brighton Jones to win the Magnolia Little League Championship on Monday, June 13 by a score of 9 to 6.
Monday’s Championship game at Raye Field pitted season-long rivals Farmers Insurance and Brighton Jones.
Each team had lost only one game during the regular season - to each other - and seeing these adversaries in the final game was fitting. Displaying patience at the plate and backed by a bases clearing triple by Zach Parke, Farmers jumped to an early lead.
Farmers expanded their lead to 7-2 through timely hitting and aggressive base running. Brighton Jones then showed their mettle by charging back and closing the gap to 7-6.
After tacking on a couple of insurance runs, Farmers relied on their two most consistent attributes over the course of the season - pitching and defense - to close out the game. Stephen “Worker” Scheer pitched the final two plus innings and was backed by sensational plays in the field by his Farmer’s teammates. The final score was 9-6 in a well-played game that truly could have gone either way. Congratulations to both teams.
