Families and Education Levy Report Released

Following through on a commitment for more accountability on getting results from programs in the 2004 Families and Education Levy, the city issued the first annual report on academic performance of students served by the levy. Programs funded through the levy began in September 2005.

The seven-year, $117 million levy, passed by Seattle voters in 2004, invests in preschool for low-income children, family support and involvement, academically-focused after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, dropout prevention for high-risk youth, and student health services.

Highlights of the annual report include: Almost all levy programs met or exceeded the outcomes set in the first year, suggesting targets should be increased going forward; 1,555 children and youth met one or more of the three levy outcomes above; 77 low-income children entered kindergarten ready to succeed; 1,159 elementary through high school students achieved academically; 319 middle and high school youth who would have dropped out, stayed in or returned to school; 4,900 middle and high school students accessed the levy-supported School Based Health Centers; 4,918 new children and youth were immunized against disease.
