The Seattle Pacific University's women's soccer team dominated the Central Washington Wildcats, winning 3-0 at Interbay Stadium last Wednesday, and continuing the Falcons' impressive season.
The nationally-ranked Falcons (9-1-1) enjoyed big contributions from senior midfielder Shannon Oakes and junior forward Jocelyn Charette.
Each had a goal and an assist in the match, as SPU moved into sole possession of second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and extended its home unbeaten streak to 26 games.
Charette set up Oakes' goal with a slick heel pass. Oakes then blasted the ball from inside the penalty box to the top of the net over the outstretched arms of Central's keeper with 25:44 gone in the first half.
Early in the second period SPU made it 2-0 on passes from Oakes and senior midfielder Meredith Teague, who floated the ball to Charette for a header inside the far post at 51:22. Teague's assist was her team-leading seventh of the year.
Freshman forward Brandi Hamre drilled in a rebound off a Janae Godoy shot early in the 81st minute for SPU's third goal and her third of the season. SPU outshot the Wildcats 17-3 in a powerful performance.
Junior goalkeeper Jesslyn Rahm picked up her fourth shutout of the season in the win. The shutout was the Falcons' third straight and seventh in the last eight games. SPU has allowed just one goal in the last 756 minutes of play.
Seattle Pacific goes on the road to face GNAC foe Western Oregon, Wednesday, Oct. 8, before returning home to host the St. Martin's Saints at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at Interbay Stadium.
On Oct. 16, the Falcons face a get-even match at home against Western Washington University. The Vikings (8-2-0) handed SPU its sole defeat of the season in a 1-0 victory at WWU's Orca Stadium. SPU outshot the Vikings 15-11 in the match and forced WWU keeper Kylie Broadbent to make 10 saves to hold the win for WWU.
The winner of the Oct. 16 SPU-WWU contest will likely claim first place in the GNAC.
