Patricia Rovzar Gallery's featured artist for July is New York native cum Vermonter Bill Brauer. Although born in the Empire State, for the past 30 years the artist has lived and painted a few hundred miles north in the Green Mountain state.
Brauer is a graduate of New York's School of Visual Arts and a protégé of the renowned Federico Castellon. His first exhibition was in 1974 as a print maker, but since that time he is most known for his figurative works in oil.
Brauer's figurative paintings are about metamorphoses. Shapes and colors subtly fuse together, creating a sensual atmosphere allowing the artist to explore-- women's relationships with each other, with men and with themselves.
The forms push and pull, intimating questions about women and hinting toward the tensions that can exist between beauty, image and society. Brauer's vision is dreamlike, filled with modulating color and shadowed figures.
The artist at times seems hypnotized by his own muse, yet is able to represent the beauty, power and mystery of the female body and mind. His paintings have an exotic and sensual magnetism where sinuous lines and rhythms combine in creating a dynamic energy.
